Skype for Symbian vs Fring
by Saad Irfan
I am big fan of Fring and have been using it from long time and now I am addicted to it. My phone stays online on Fring almost all day whenever I am WiFi range. When I heard about Skype for Symbian, I thought to test it and it was harsh for me to prefer one application. At one hand Fring offers me all in one feature. Means I can login into my Skype, MSN, Google Talk and Yahoo all. But with Skype for Symbian I was limited. I was also not happy with advertisement slot during instant messaging in Firing’s new edition. But could not manage to say goodbye to Fring and use Skype for Symbian only.
For testing purpose I compared Skype for Symbian with Fring on two E series smartphones, E51 and E63. Not sure but there was little difference in voice clarity. Skype for Symbian seems to have more clear voice. However the Voice mail availability in Skype for Symbian really makes a difference. Instant Messaging on both application got equal points, as my Fring and Skype for Symbian, both were online. I received replies in same interval of time. But message delivering speed was faster in Skype for Symbian. Since Fring has recently put advertisement slot in chat messengers so I find Skype for Symbian finer to use.
File sharing experience in Skype for Symbian was faster. You can know your file status in real time, as user on other side has accepted your file or not.
The disappointed factor in Skype for Symbian was that, I could not see video calling feature in it like Fring is offering it for some latest Symbian Phones. Account logging in speed was quite fast for Skype for Symbian as compared to Fring. But again, Fring offers all in one access. In case you want to use Skype as primary calling, I will recommend you should go for Skype for Symbian because of its more clear accessibility, account management and voicemail management.
Fring is still up with more votes because of its interesting features but when it comes to using Skype as Every day calling, Skype for Symbian is best option because it offers a lot for managing your Skype account.
